Photography recap

Throughout the trimester, we learned many settings of the camera and ways to utilize these settings into taking pictures. We have learned three very important settings, including shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. We also learned many compositional techniques like color, space, perspective, balance, and framing. I think this class was very useful because it opened me up to a new type of technology. Not only did I get better at using a camera, but I learned how to use an apple computer better. I learned applications on the mac and I also learned how to use them to my advantage. I think my favorite part of the class was definitely becoming more intact with programs like photoshop. I really liked editing photos, and learning the tools of photoshop. I think this class in a way was really hard for me, it's my lowest grade, with a B+, even below chemistry and geometry.

I think this Gimp assignment was actually very hard. I think it was hard to get each photo to the same zoomed in length. I think mine turned out fairly good, though I don't think it's perfect.

Light Painting

Shutter Speed: 15/1 sec
ISO: 80
Apereature: F/3.2
To create this photo, I used a technique called light painting. It was difficult at first, but I found it to be very fun once I figured it out. I wasn't sure which photo to use, but I ended up choosing this one because I like all the colors and how you can see the features of the face,
These photos were also all taken using light painting. I like the picture with the 2 stick figures a lot, and I think the picture with the two green faces also turned out pretty good.

Gimp Assignment : School Context

In this assignment we were asked to take a part of are school and add whatever we wanted to it, which would change the perspective. I found the Scooby doo characters off of Google, and changed the car green using tools in Gimp. I really enjoyed this project, and liked it the best out of all the Gimp assignments!

Architecture

I chose this picture, because I think it really demonstrates architecture, because of the shapes, curves, and colors. I also like that there is brick showing which shows you that this is part of a building. I think the fact that the subject of the photograph is hard to tell what it is makes the photo more interesting.
ISO: 80
fstop: f/5.8
Shutter Speed: 1/160
These pictures were taken all around downtown Saline. Most of these pictures are of a large building that shows architecture, but the main photo I chose shows a zoomed in image of architecture against a small piece of a brick wall.

Panning

(name is hard to see, because I blurred it)

I learned from this assignment that it's very hard to get the blur and also keep the subject in focus at the same time. This photo was my best example, even though the cars and the far background are the only blur in the photo. A lot of my photos showed too much blur, where even my subject was blurred. I think this happened because I didn't pre-focus my subject enough. Overall, I think this photo is pretty decent, but I would like to get more practice with panning.

Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec.
f stop: f/8
ISO: 80

Still Life

I chose this photo for still life, because I think it shows good compositional techniques like the texture of the shells. I also like this photo a lot because I like how the mirror in the background shows the back of the starfish.

Shutter Speed: 1/20 sec
ISO: 400
f stop: f/4

These photos are also of still life, and they are also of shells. The smaller shells were brought back from Ft. Lauderdale beach, and the starfish and other large shell were brought back from a beach in California. The photo with the marbles was taken through a glass jar which is why the photo is a little blurred. I think these photos were pretty decent, but I found the starfish photo to have the most compositional techniques.

Gimp assignement 3: panoraomic

This project was very difficult to me. I found it hard to blend in the three lines of the pictures, but I ended up figuring it out!

Gimp Assignment 2: car retouch

I thought this project was fairly easy and I thought it was really fun to learn more about Gimp. I think I was successful, but the hardest part of this project was tinting the windshield.

Motion

I chose this photo because I believe it really demonstrates the movement and motions of soccer. I had to zoom in and try to get as close as possible to the the play. It was hard for the picture not to get blurry.
shutter speed: 1/2000
Fstop: 5.6
ISO:400
I took these photos of my soccer team, while I was hurt a couple weeks ago and thought they fit the category of motion. I was very surprised that these photos turned out so good, because I feel as if I have learned a lot of photography techniques in the past couple of weeks.

Portrait

I chose this picture because I think it shows the personality of my little cousin. I think it really shows the features of her face along with emphasizing her expression in the picture. I like how this photo looks natural and doesn't look like it was meant to be taken.
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO:200
Shutter Speed: 1/15

These photos were all taken at my birthday party over the weekend. I think they all not only share the character of the person, but they show the atmosphere of the party. I was debating between choosing the close up of my brother lawrence, which is the picture in color, and the one I did choose.

Gimp Assignment 1

During this assignment, I was very confused at first. The directions were a little strange but then I got more comfortable using the program. One thing I liked about GIMP was it had a lot of cool and useful tools, but I did dislike two things about GIMP. One thing I didn't like was that there are a lot of different boxes, instead of of just one screen, and I found this to be very stressful. Another thing I didn't like was it was very complicated and didn't have much organization. I think GIMP will come in handy throughout the rest of the trimester, if we must do intricate and complicated editing techniques. If not, I think photoshop is more practical.

nature

I chose this photo because I feel as if it has a very clear focal point. It also has many compositional aspects like the rule of thirds, texture, and pattern. I also like how the flower has many layers, and how the texture of the leaves is present.

ISO: 400
Aperture: f/4
Shutter Speed: 1/400

I took a lot of other nature pictures which I also really like. In a lot of the pictures, some things were blurry because of the sun and the fact that I took the pictures in mid-day.

Animal photos

For the animal assignment, I chose the picture above because I feel as if the water has nice lighting. The texture of the duck's feather is also very visible. It gives viewers of the picture an insight on this duck's life. The duck looks concentrated, as it swims around possibly looking for food. I think the animal assignment really allowed me to see many different types of animals in action.

Technical information-
Aperture: f/5.8
Shutter Speed: 1/125 sec
ISO: 400

Animal Inspiration

I have decided on choosing animal photography for my first photo assignment. I feel like this option fits me best, because I really love animals and I feel as if I will be able to capture their feelings and emotions. I would like to take pictures of animals in action, or animals that have nice texture. I find that I will be inspired by animals that consist of many colors, and also by animals that are very bright in color.

Some photos that have inspired me are...

I have chosen these photos, because some have a beautiful background and colors, and others show animals up close in action. Some show animals eating and climbing, which I really brought me into a day in the life of that animal.

Composition Assignment #2

In this assignment, we were supposed to look for 5 more elements of photography while taking our pictures. These 5 included, balance, color, perspective, space, and framing. Balance included being able to take an equally set picture. Color meant using this element to really bring out a certain part of a picture. Perspective pictures are taken from a different point of view. Space meant having a part of your picture isolated from it's surroundings, and framing meant putting something through a frame to give it a new look.

My balance photo was taken of a car tire. This showed balance because it is symmetrical and gives the person whose observing the photo a feeling that the amount of space free is equal. My color photo was taken of a a drinking fountain which I added color to in photoshop. I thought this was a good idea because it really brought out the water and showed texture and shape of the water. My perspective photo was me peering into a recycling bin. This showed perspective because it was me looking down on the bottles, instead of just taking a straight on shot. My space photo was of a Tigers symbol, and this shows space because it's isolated from everything else and it's also set against a dark blue background. My framing photo is taken out a window which frames the image.

From this project I learned how to apply these 5 tools of photography to my photos. I found that framing pictures are very easy to do, and that it really brings out the overall image in the picture. It can also be very useful when taking a picture of a place or setting. I think color was also very interesting, because it was cool that I had the option to take a picture of something clear and add color to it in photoshop. I think this project was very useful because I now have 11 different elements of photography in my back pocket, that I can use and apply to my work at any time.

Composition Assignment #1

In this assignment, composition #1, we were supposed to take 6 pictures. These 6 pictures were supposed to be taken of symmetry, lines, pattern, texture, rule of thirds, and depth of field.

The symmetry photo was taken at a park in Ann Arbor, where many people got together and participated in the down syndrome buddy walk. The pattern photo was taken at Saline High school and is a picture of the main stairwell. The Texture photo was taken of a large tree trunk and shows texture because of the rough feeling of the bark. The lines photo was taken of tile in my kitchen and consists of many diagonal lines. The rule of thirds photo was taken of my dog Gracie and shows her "staring of the picture" instead of just a straight on shot. The depth of field photo was also taken at a park in Ann Arbor and the trees in the far back of the picture start to fade away and blur.

From this project, I learned that many photos consist of more than one element. For example, I found that many of my pictures had both texture and pattern. I also found that though some of the pictures I took were very pretty, there was a lot of them that contained zero of the six elements. I thought that finding a photo with lines was hard, because everywhere I turned there were lines, and I didn't know what type of lines would be best suited for this type of project. I really enjoyed this project because it helped me realize that photography was similar to art.
